Dr. Geesje Duursma

Dr. Geesje Duursma is an entrepreneur; she studied business economics and obtained her PhD from the University of Groningen in 2024. She is a proud supporter of the Ubbo Emmius Fund. With her interest in science and her belief that lesser-known research projects also deserve a chance, she helps to encourage groundbreaking research. In this interview, Geesje shares why she decided to support the UEF and how important she finds it to make a difference in the world of science.

What motivated you to donate to the Ubbo Emmius Fund?

“I believe it is vital to encourage scientific research, particularly in fields that do not always have access to major funding and grants. Niche research can yield surprising insights that help society progress in unexpected ways.”

How does the work of the Ubbo Emmius Fund contribute to causes you hold dear?

“The UEF makes it possible to support scientific projects that would otherwise not receive funding. That is essential to me, because even less popular or lesser-known topics deserve a chance. This fund contributes to inclusive, broad scientific progress, and that appeals to me enormously.”

What does it mean to you to be part of the UEF, which supports the university?

“During my time as a student, I wasn’t a member of a student society, so I felt less connected to my former fellow students and the city of Groningen. Thanks to the UEF, I do feel that connection now. It’s a lovely way to stay involved with the university and do my bit.”

Would you recommend others to support the Ubbo Emmius Fund?

“Definitely! It doesn’t have to be a large sum or ‘American-style’, but making a contribution feels good. The idea that your support can make a difference to scientific research that can make our world a little better is very rewarding.”

Any final message?

“I hope more people realise that every donation, big or small, helps to advance science. Together, we can make research possible that otherwise wouldn’t be funded.”
